Michael Nyman – piano, Gabrielle Lester – violin, Catherine Thompson – violin, Catherine Musker – viola, Tony Hinnigan – cello, Martin Elliott – bass guitar, David Roach – soprano and alto saxophone, Simon Haram – soprano and alto saxophone, Steve Sidwell – trumpet, flugelhorn, Dave Lee – French horn, Nigel Barr – bass trombone, Ralph Harrison – sound engineer, John Greenough – sound engineer Michael Nyman was born in London in 1944 and in his twenties, following studies at the Royal Academy of... Music temporarily decided to turn his back on composition. Instead he studied the classics, wrote about music theory and collected Romanian folk music. (In 1968 he was the first person to use the term “minimalism” in music theory.) In the seventies he became a composer for the National Theatre in London and after the success of a Goldoni première the musical ensemble decided to stay together in order to adapt classical works in a modern way. This is how the Michael Nyman Band formed in 1976. There are few instrumental groups or musical forms for which Nyman has not written music. His art has fed on contemporary minimalist music, opera, pop and ethnic sources, and so his work, rather like that of Alexander Balanescu or Philip Glass, goes well beyond any stiff boundaries of genre. One thing is for sure: his great popular successes have been with his film music for Jane Campion (The Piano) and Peter Greenaway (for example: Prospero’s Books, Draftsman’s Contract, Drowning in Numbers, The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover). So it is only natural that we will hear some of these pieces at the Palace of Arts.
