The history of the Budapest International Music Competition extends back to 1933, when it was won by Annie Fischer. The competition was updated in 1956, after which it has been held annually in various categories. As a member of the European Union of Music Competitions for Youth, the Budapest Music Competition enjoys a respected position among the competitions of the world. This year marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Ferenc Liszt, who is rightly being celebrated as a guardian of the s...pirit and culture of Hungary and Europe in 2011. It is the intention of the organisers of the international piano competition staged in his honour in Budapest for the participants to become as immersed in the great romantic master's oeuvre as possible, and to discover, learn and pass on those of his works that are still missing from the standard piano repertoire. After all, Ferenc Liszt did so much to revitalise the piano sound, the concept of harmony and the techniques of composition. Presented by: Filharmónia Budapest
