Since it was founded in 1929, many top conductors have shaped the profile of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. Its first music director Hans Rosbaud placed emphasis on Romantic and contemporary compositions. During the Eliahu Inbal era (1974–1990) besides Schumann and Brahms cycles, the ensemble made the first ever recordings of Bruckner’s symphonies from original sketches, which were internationally acknowledged. Dimitri Kitajenko during his tenure from 1990 to 1996 programmed many works ...by Russian composers, while American Huge Wolff won praise for helping the orchestra become more flexible and stylistically diverse. While music director (1997–2006) he incorporated into the performances the achievements of historical performance modes and in this concert we shall hear Haydn’s Symphony in C major with natural trumpets, horns and timpani. Paavo Järvi is from Estonia and since 2001 has been music director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. He has held the same post since 2006 with the Frankfurt Radio Orchestra and he has brought Northern works into their repertoire, which already extends from Monteverdi to Stockhausen. Based on his American recordings, he is a supreme interpreter of Bartók, as is German violinist Christian Tetzlaff. Besides the concertos of Beethoven, Brahms and Tchaikovsky, his repertoire includes concertos by Bartók, Berg, Ligeti and Shostakovich and has given many world premières of contemporary composers. He says he prefers his current master violin, made by Peter Greiner in 2002, to the Stradivarius that he used earlier.
