“The Country Sings” is a unique initiative and its first concert in 2006 was a tremendous success. The aim is for singers across Hungary to join the Budapest Academic Choral Society and the Dohnányi Orchestra Budafok each year to sing a single great oratorio of the music repertoire. The Missa Solemnis (op. 123) was completed by Beethoven in 1823, four years before his death and is one of his most personal confessions of faith. “From the heart – may it go to the heart”, he wrote on the first pag...e of the score. Although he set the Catholic mass text to music, it is a work that transcends denominations. His own religion was moral and humanity, and regarded the meaning of human existence as the creation of external and internal peace. “He did not write a mass for conventions of religiosity, for those praying with bowed heads, but for those who in their holy rapture hammer on the gates of heaven”, said Kristóf Csengery. An essential element of the work is its extremities, which change along with the movement characters: pleading in the Kyrie, ecstasy in the Gloria and struggle in the Credo. “We can discern in even the gentler sections such as the overwhelming devotion of the Benedictus or the stubborn almost childish wilfulness of the Dona nobis pacem with its imploring repetitions a man trying to transcend his limitations” – said also Csengery in his radio lecture. The monumental work poses a tremendous challenge to the performers, which is one reason why it is heard relatively rarely in the concert hall.
