Conductor: Gábor Hollerung Dvořák: Stabat Mater “The Country Sings” was created in 2005 and was an immediate success. This unique initiative brought together singers from all over Hungary to join with the Budapest Academic Choir Society and the Dohnányi Orchestra Budafok every year to perform some great work of the oratorio repertoire. One of the most popular choral works to this day remains Dvořák’s Stabat Mater conducted at its première in London in 1884 by the composer bringing him inter...national fame. It is a monumental work that Dvořák wrote in response to the tragedy of seeing his two daughters and son die prematurely. He transposes the medieval hymn commencing Stabat mater dolorosa into his own musical language as a dialogue between God and death, with characteristic Dvořákian melodies. The opening and closing movements are constructed from the same material and this imposes a pleasing structure on the entire ten movement work: the opening movement is a description of pain but the finale is a stunning expression of redemption.
