Péter Scholcz, president of the Dutch Ferenc Liszt Society, is a conductor living in the Netherlands dedicated to preserving the history of Hungarian music. He studied at the Béla Bartók Music High School in Budapest before attending the Royal Conservatory of the Netherlands and reading music theory at the State University of Utrecht. As founder of the Capella Liszt Chamber Choir, he played a key role in the rediscovery of Mihály Mosonyi's church music and, of course, the performance and recordi...ng of Ferenc Liszt's choral works. The group's repertoire strongly features choral pieces by Béla Bartók, Zoltán Kodály and Géza Frid, a student of Kodály and Bartók who settled in Holland. Michael Haydn, younger brother of Joseph and another composer with ties to Hungary, also features. As part of the Liszt year, and in collaboration with outstanding organist Csaba Király, it is no coincidence that Liszt's Missa choralis, founded on Gregorian melodies, and his grandiose B-A-C-H Variations are joined on the programme by works by Mosonyi. The paths of the two composers crossed at numerous points. Mosonyi was born four years later than Liszt, also on the border of Austria with Hungary. Their meeting in 1856 proved to be a defining moment for Mosonyi, but the admiration was far from one-sided. Church music eventually brought the two musicians closer together: Mosonyi played double bass at the première of the Esztergom Mass, and it was for him that Liszt added a double bass solo to the work. In exchange, Mosonyi wrote piano arrangements of Liszt's work, which the great composer welcomed with genuine enthusiasm. Presented by: Palace of Arts
