Featuring: Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra Pianist and conductor: Tamás Vásáry Chopin: Piano Concerto in F minor, op. 21 Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in C minor (“Fate”), op. 67 Tamás Vásáry, who is turning 75 this year, requires no introduction to Hungarian audiences since he remains one of the most popular figures in Hungarian music life. He was forced to emigrate from Hungary in 1956 but based his career in London and New York. After returning to Hungary, he became general music di...rector and principal conductor of the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1993 until 2006. He has conducted regularly since the seventies but it was as a concert pianist that he first became internationally celebrated. He gave his first concert at the age of eight; he studied at the Budapest Academy of Music with Ernő Dohnányi and Lajos Hernádi and even as a student, enjoyed some stunning successes. In 1948 he won the Franz Liszt Piano Competition and in 1955 the Marguerite Long Piano Competition in Paris, and also did well at the Warsaw Chopin Competition. As a pianist, he was a guest at all the leading international festivals and played as a soloist with virtually every important orchestra in the world. He made numerous recordings for top labels, including works by Liszt, Chopin, Debussy and Rachmaninov; he also recorded Brahms’s chamber music for piano with musicians of the Berlin Philharmonic, and also recorded the Mozart piano concertos with this orchestra. He was awarded the Kossuth Prize in 1998 in recognition of his work rejuvenating the Radio Orchestra as well as for his activities as both conductor and pianist. But his work bringing the eternal values of music to a wider audience is no less phenomenal a success.
