Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 is one of the most beautiful and significant Russian piano concertos of the 20th century, its every motif radiating the Russian spirit of melancholy. Until the second subject enters in the first movement, the piano does not even play the main theme, instead breaking it up into an important accompaniment for the orchestra. At the end of the second movement, the composer paints a vision of sunset, while in the third movement we encounter one of Rachmaninoff’s mo...st beautiful melodies. The other work to be heard this evening will be Ravel’s orchestration of Mussorgsky’s suite for piano, Pictures at an Exhibition. Choi Insu was born in Tokyo in 1961 and has played piano since the age of four. Emil Gilels spoke appreciatively of his playing in 1978, and in 1987, he graduated in piano from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, winning the Dohnányi Piano Competition in the same year. Since 1987, he has taught at the Varga Tibor Institute of Music at the Széchenyi István University in Győr. A resident of Hungary, Choi Insu holds master classes every summer in Japan. Gergely Ménesi was born in Budapest in 1970 and played violin from the age of six. He received his diploma in conducting from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in 1997. In 1998, he won second place in the 9th International János Ferencsik Conductors’ Competition. Since 1998, he has also taught at the Varga Tibor Institute of Music of Széchenyi István University in Győr, and is conductor of both the Győr University Orchestra and the Szent István Gimnázium Jubilee Symphony Orchestra.
