Conductor: Sándor Gyüdi Featuring: Viktor Vaszy Choir Goldmark: Queen of Sheba – overture Iván Madarász: Chapters of a Story R. Strauss: An Alpine Symphony, op. 64 In the first half of this concert, two distant worlds meet. It was the first opera by Károly Goldmark, that made him world famous. After hearing the overture, we shall be treated to another setting of a biblical story. Iván Madarász was inspired by Dezső Szomory’s drama to write this work for choir. According to the composer the ...music was not written as the illustration to a stage work because it does not follow the action throughout. Its structure is determined by the subjective order suggested by the “visions” of the play. In the second half of the concert, we will hear the most immense of all the symphonic poems of Richard Strauss. Comprising of twenty-two episodes, it leads the listener from one night to the next through the Bavarian Alps. This expedition has a secretive relationship to the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche. The Szeged Symphony Orchestra has accepted a daunting challenge with this programme. Until the end of the Second World War, the orchestra was led by the young Ferenc Fricsay and during this time, they also worked with Mengelberg and Mascagni. The legendary conductor Viktor Vaszy organised it into an independent institution in 1969 and also since then, they enable the Szeged National Theatre to put on opera performances. The ensemble has matured into an important concert orchestra and since 1999, it has been led by Sándor Gyüdi who ten years earlier, began directing the Viktor Vaszy Choir.
