Mendelssohn’s incidental music to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, played by Xavér Varnus on the organ, with Shakespeare’s story performed by superb Hungarian theatre artists. There are few such magical nights in the calendar as Midsummer Night. Since ancient times, Celts, Germans, Slavs and Northern peoples have celebrated the middle of summer in the open air. Because this celebration expressed the victory of light and enlightenment over darkness and death, the Catholic Church also made it the nam...e day of John the Baptist. Shakespeare’s eternal comedy, which draws on an early English fairy world is also set on this day. For this theatrical masterpiece, Mendelssohn wrote incidental music that is suspiciously like a masterpiece itself which the enfant terrible of Hungarian music, Xavér Varnus, with his amazing box office pulling power, transcribed for organ a few years ago. Until now, there was never the space where theatre and the organ could meet. (For centuries, organs were largely placed in churches in which it is not possible to perform a theatre piece; theatres simply don’t have organs!) However, the creation of the Palace of Art’s new organ means this manuscript can be taken out of the draw at long last. The story that will be heard and acted in the concert hall will continue later. After the performance, in the square before the Palace of Arts, there will be fire jumping – of the recognised methods, this is the only one that will make love permanent! Experience shows it is a wise thing to believe Mr Shakespeare.
