The Staatskapelle Dresden is one of the world’s oldest musical ensembles and most probably the only one which has been operating without a break for 460 years. It has enjoyed a continuous reputation as the best throughout all those years. It was founded on September 22nd 1548 and been directed by musicians like Heinrich Schütz, Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Wagner. In the 20th century, its sound was also shaped by the work of Fritz Reiner, Fritz Busch, Karl Böhm and Rudolf Kempe. The ensemble..., which gave world premières of works by Wagner, Schumann and Liszt, was in 2007 the first orchestra to be awarded the “Prize of the European Culture Foundation for the Preservation of the World’s Musical Heritage”. It remains one of the great custodians of German Romantic musical traditions. It is also often referred to as the “Strauss Orchestra” since it enjoyed a close relationship with Richard Strauss which lasted for sixty years. During this time, the orchestra also premièred nine of his operas. The music director since summer 2007 has been Fabio Luisi while the conductor laureate since 1991 has been Sir Colin Davis. Myung-Whun Chung is familiar now to Hungarian audiences following his performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 in 2005 at the Palace of Arts. He was born in South Korea and is now the country’s honorary cultural ambassador. Since the 1980s, he has been also an active participant in French musical life. He was music director of the Opéra Bastille and since 2000 he has filled the same post at the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra but has worked with all the world’s leading ensembles. The soloist in the Mozart Concerto, Lars Vogt was born in Germany in 1970 and is one of the supreme artists of our days. This is also proven by the fact that he was chosen by the Berlin Philharmonic as its very first pianist-in-residence in the 2003–2004 season.
