We welcome back the Russian symphony orchestra with the longest history of them all, which was founded back in 1882 by the order of Tsar Alexander the Third. They are associated with the Russian premières of works by Richard Strauss, Mahler and Bruckner, and in the first half of the 20th century, their musical profile was shaped by Artur Nikisch, Aleksandr Glazunov, Serge Koussevitsky, Bruno Walter, Otto Klemperer and Erich Kleiber. But perhaps the musician most responsible for the orchestra bec...oming one of the best in the world was Yevgeni Mravinsky, who was appointed in 1938 and was at the help for half a century. During that period, the ensemble, known then as the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, was the primary interpreter of the works of Dmitri Shostakovich. They premièred six of his symphonies but are much in demand as interpreters of works by other Russian and Soviet composers. The orchestra’s current music director is Yuri Temirkanov who was Mravinsky’s assistant for two decades, but who in 1976 was appointed principal conductor of the Kirov (now Mariinsky) Theatre. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, he became chief conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, then chief guest conductor of the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He also led the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and in 2007, became principal guest conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre. This year in January, he took up the post of Music Director of the Parma Teatro Regio. Born in Greece, twenty eight year old George-Emmanuel Lazaridis has been performing in prestigious concert halls since his teens, venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, the Vienna Konzerthaus and the Athens and Montpellier festivals. He has played with conductors such as Neville Marriner and Ingo Metzmacher and given recitals with Leonidas Kavakos and the Medici and Ysaÿe Quartets.
