Conductor: Yuri Temirkanov Piotr Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto in B flat minor, op. 23 Symphony No. 5 in E minor, op. 64 The St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra has the greatest history of any Russian or Soviet orchestra. It has been led by Alexander Glazunov, Erich Kleiber, Otto Klemperer, Serge Koussevitsky and Bruno Walter, although its modern profile was fashioned by Yevgeni Mravinsky who led the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra for fifty years. During that period they premiered virtu...ally all of Shostakovich’s symphonies but they are also among the most committed interpreters of Tchaikovsky and Russian romantic music. They were the first Soviet orchestra to travel abroad where they were conducted by such great names as André Cluytens, Zoltán Kodály, Josef Krips, Charles Munch and Leopold Stokowski. When Mravinsky died in 1988, he was succeeded by Yuri Temirkanov and he conducted the orchestra at a two hundredth anniversary concert at the London Royal Festival Hall. Temirkanov is much in demand from concert organisers and record producers and has conducted virtually all of Europe’s major ensembles. From 1999/2000 he has also been the music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He has recorded the greatest masterpieces of Soviet and Russian music, among them all Stravinsky’s ballets and Tchaikovsky’s symphonies. Thirty two year old pianist Denis Matsuev was born in Irkuts, Siberia and exploded onto the international stage with victory in the 1998 Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition. He is familiar to Hungarian audiences, giving his debut Budapest recital in 2001, and has been a regular guest at the Budapest Spring Festival ever since. He performs with Russian and international orchestras across the globe and his playing has frequently been compared to Horowitz. The concert will be preceded by a discussion entitled 'ForeWord', beginning at 18:30 in the Bartók Béla National Concert Hall, where people with a ticket for the performance in question can get acquainted with the performing artist and the works on show.
