The closing concert of the Hungarian Chopin Year also ushers in the 2011 Liszt Year. It is no exaggeration to call Sinfonia Varsovia one of Europe’s finest and most flexible orchestras; its artistic director is one of the great names of contemporary music, Krzysztof Penderecki, although since 2008, its music director has been French conductor Marc Minkowski, who has Polish and Hungarian roots. The Sinfonia Varsovia owes its creation to one of the greatest performing artists of the 20th century, ...Yehudi Menuhin; at a guest concert with the Polish Chamber Orchestra, the ensemble was expanded with the best wind players in Poland. Menuhin expressed his regret should the ensemble fold after his visit and the cultural powers of the time decided to maintain the new ensemble. It was a fine decision: Sinfonia Varsovia is without exaggeration one of the best and most flexible orchestras in Europe, with a repertoire that extends from the 18th century to contemporary music. They have excelled in all areas – proven by their guest artists, from Claudio Abbado and Mstislav Rostropovich to Anne-Sophie Mutter. This evening, they will be conducted by the Georgian musician George Tchitchinadze. He is in his early forties and studied at the famous Dnesin Institute. The soloist this evening will be the well-known pianist Gábor Farkas, who was placed third at the 2000 Franz Liszt International Piano Competition, and in 2003 won the Hungarian Radio National Piano Competition. He is one of the finest exponents of Liszt and the Romantic piano literature among the younger generation. He will be the soloist in the concerto written by Chopin, named by his Polish admirers the “new Mozart”. He composed it by public demand on his return to Warsaw from Vienna in 1830. It was premièred in March that year at the Polish National Theatre, before an audience of nearly nine hundred.
