The Paganini of the trumpet? Or perhaps the Caruso of the trumpet? It is difficult to decide which epithet suits Sergei Nakariakov best. But one thing is certain, the 34-year-old is a remarkably talented musician. Having switched from piano to trumpet as a result of a childhood injury, he successfully embodies the virtuosity of the “devil's violinist” and brings Caruso's tonal quality to this short length of brass tubing. It can be said without irony that his technique knows no boundaries. He ha...s perfected the rare skill of circular breathing – inhaling more air even as he continues to play. He also plays a flugelhorn with four rather than three valves, allowing much lower notes to be reached. Evidently, conventional trumpet literature is too narrow for Nakariakov. For instance, he has adapted Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme – originally composed for the cello with an orchestral accompaniment – and Haydn's Cello Concerto in C Major. The latter was written for the cellist of the Esterházy court around 1761 but only discovered two centuries later. The borders of his homeland, the Soviet Union, also proved restrictive, prompting the young Sergei's parents to emigrate to Israel. This allowed their prodigy to travel extensively, performing at venues as diverse as the Salzburg Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Music festival, the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, the Lincoln Center in New York and London's Royal Festival Hall.
