Conductor: Alpaslan Ertüngealp Soloist: Gábor Varga – clarinet Wagner: Tannhäuser – overture Zoltán Kovács: Dream Dances Scriabin: Symphony No. 2 in C minor, op. 29 Of Turkish and Greek descent, Alpaslan Ertüngealp graduated from Ervin Lukács’s conducting class at the Budapest Academy of Music in 2000. In 2001, he became the resident guest conductor of the Szombathely Savaria Orchestra and since 2006, he has been its artistic director. He has initiated an important professional rejuvenati...on of the ensemble. With an intensive regime of rehearsals, he invited top soloists and also incorporated some quite unusual works in the orchestra’s programme. An example is the work by Alexander Scriabin, which is rarely heard anywhere in the world these days. Although he is famous for his mystical late works, his earlier Symphony No. 2 was completed in 1901. More than fifty years earlier, Richard Wagner wrote his Tannhäuser Overture which is now a favourite in the concert halls. Its dignified brass passages, lyrical cello melodies and then the virtuosic effects of the bacchanalia exploit the full spectrum of orchestral sonority.
