Featuring: Kateřina Hebelková – singer Conductor: Alpaslan Ertüngealp Kodály: Dances of Galánta Eugen Suchoň: Nox et solitudo László Tihanyi: Krios Zoltán Kodály spent seven years of his childhood in Galánta where he first heard the famous Gypsy Galánta band. “May this small work continue the old tradition of Galánta”, he wrote on the frontispiece of one of the most popular of his symphonic works, composed in 1933. In Slovakia, Eugen Suchoň is regarded as the leading 20th century Slovak ...composer. He composed his song cycle Nox et solitudo, setting verses by his countryman Ivan Krasko, in 1932 while only twenty four years old. In those days, his style was still influenced by Romantic music but we can detect characteristic features of Slovak folk music as well. László Tihanyi graduated from the composition and music theory teaching faculties of the Academy of Music before obtaining a conductor’s diploma as well. He has taught there since 1978. His first composer’s evening took place in 1989, the first recording of his own compositions was released in 1992. Many of his works have been premiered in Hungary and abroad. He composed his orchestral work Krios in 1985. He has received several Artisjus Awards as well as the Erkel Prize in recognition of his work. Alpaslan Ertüngealp was born in Istanbul and studied piano and conducting in Budapest. He has worked with the Savaria Symphony Orchestra since 2001 and in 2006, was appointed the ensemble’s artistic director. From January to March 2005, before its official opening, the Palace of Arts underwent a testing phase during which Hungarian orchestras performed almost daily, giving us not only a sense of the hall’s capabilities but also presenting a fascinating picture of Hungary’s orchestral life. The positive experiences gathered during this “spontaneous” festival spawned the concept of turning it into a permanent feature of the Palace of Arts’ concert series and it has now become an established new tradition. Thus in 2006, the series Symphonia Hungarorum – Hungarian Symphonic Panorama was created and in 2007, no less than fifteen Hungarian symphonic ensembles will represent themselves at the festival. As last year, the orchestras are free to choose their own programmes with the proviso they perform in each concert at least one 20th or 21st century Hungarian work.
