Conductor: Philippe Herreweghe Soloist: Martin Helmchen – piano Schumann: Piano Concerto in A minor, op. 54 Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 in E flat major (“Eroica”), op. 55 Philippe Herreweghe was born in Gent and studied to be a doctor while also taking lessons in conducting. In 1970 he formed his ensemble Collegium Vocale Gent. Over the years, he has built up an imposing repertoire spanning many centuries, from the works of Josquin des Prés to compositions by Arnold Schoenberg, as well as an i...mpressive discography. His interpretations are characterised by profound scholarly preparation and often flashing dynamism and suggestivity. He has founded an ensemble for virtually every period; he subsequently created the Chapelle Royale, the Ensemble Vocal Européen, and in 1991, the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées for performing Romantic repertoire on suitable period instruments. The Royal Flemish Philharmonic is based in Antwerp and it was under Herreweghe, who has been the music director since 1998 that it has developed into a leading ensemble. Herreweghe is currently undertaking in depth studies of Beethoven and is recording all the symphonies with the orchestra. In interpretation and performance, their account of the Eroica Symphony will be a unique experience for the audience. Born in Berlin, pianist Martin Helmchen is just twenty six. He made his international breakthrough with victory in the 2001 Clara Haskil Piano Competition. Since then he has worked with such leading conductors and ensembles as Lawrence Foster, Valery Gergiev, Marek Janowski, Vladimir Jurowski as well as the leading German orchestras, the BBC symphonic ensembles, the Vienna and the London Philharmonic, the Paris National Orchestra and the Tokyo NHK Orchestra.
