Wagner drew inspiration for Parsifal from Parzival and Titurel, two epic poems by celebrated minnesinger Wolfram von Eschenbach. He originally wanted to combine the piece with Tristan and Isolde, submitting the first draft of his new and – as it turned out – final opera to King Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1860-ban, but the final work was only fully completed in 1882. The premier was held at the second Bayreuth Festival in front of Ludwig II and his entire court. The King of Bavaria financed the perf...ormance by the orchestra and choir of the Munich Opera, significantly reducing the cost of a festival that was loss-making in its early years. The adaptation of the opera for the Palace of Arts debuted in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall in 2006 and was modified slightly for a second performance in 2009. Ádám Fischer, Artistic Director of the Budapest Wagner Days and conductor of the operas, has made use of all his experiences gained over the past three years in Bayreuth and the Palace of Arts. “We know each other better. My interest in the past is mostly focused on that which can be made use of in the future. Like all masterpieces, Parsifal resounds with eternal truths,” Fischer explains. “The work is like a cliff face: immovable, unique and timeless. Yet, if we view the cliff from another angle, the image projected is of a new and different truth, and one that is equally immovable, unique and timeless.”
