“Joseph Haydn’s oratorio Die Schöpfung (The Creation) is one of the most important works in European musical history. Its first performance took place privately – for invited guests only – in the Schwarzenberg Palace in Vienna in 1798. Both the work’s première, conducted by Haydn himself, and its first public concert performance a year later met with resounding success: the oratorio had an immeasurable influence on both Haydn’s contemporaries and subsequent generations, remaining perhaps the com...poser’s most popular work to this day. For Hungarians, it does not hurt to recall as frequently as possible the oft-forgotten fact that the first performance of the masterpiece outside Vienna took place in the Buda Castle on 8 March 1800. After a thorough rehearsal period, Haydn himself conducted the Hungarian première. The concert was part of a series of celebrations to mark the wedding of the Grand Duchess Alexandra Pavlovna (which also included a piano recital by Ludwig van Beethoven in the Court Theatre of Buda on 7 May 1800), and is remembered to this day in the name of “Alkotás” street in Buda (the contemporary Hungarian translation of the work’s title). The Purcell Choir and Orfeo Orchestra first performed The Creation in the spring of 2005 on period instruments. It was the first time the work had been played in Hungary since Haydn’s première. The concert in the Liszt Academy of Music was followed by another in late summer at Fertőszentmiklós (of which a recording was made). We also had the opportunity to perform the work on several occasions during the “Haydn Year” of 2009. This evening, we will perform this wonderful score for the first time in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, a concert to commemorate the Hungarian première in the Buda Castle almost exactly 212 years ago.” György Vashegyi Presented by: Orfeo Music Foundation
