“Although we prepared this concert for the 2009 Haydn Year, remembering the two hundredth anniversary of Joseph Haydn’s death, the first half will exceptionally be handed over to his brother Michael Haydn. The younger brother, who has been unfairly neglected, wrote four monumental German language masses between 1768 and 1771, the manuscripts of which are in the National Széchényi Library in Budapest. These hugely important works are largely unknown and almost never performed despite being the mo...st important works the younger Haydn ever wrote. In this concert, we will be giving the first performance since the 18th century of his 1768 oratorio Der Kampf der Buße und Bekehrung. After the break, we will perform Joseph Haydn’s Heiligmesse (Hob. XXII:10) written some thirty years later for Prince Nicholas Esterházy the Second in 1796, the first of his six late »great« masses. The performance of his masterpiece is the final episode in a project begun in 1998, during the course of which the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Orchestra have performed all of Haydn’s masses and symphonies in Hungary.” György Vashegyi
