Perhaps Handel's best-known work, Messiah will be performed here by the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Orchestra in its earliest, and least frequently heard, 1741-42 version. The English-language oratorio, to be conducted by György Vashegyi, is based on a libretto written by landowner and patron of the arts Charles Jennens using parts of the Old and New Testaments. Messiah enjoyed great popularity even in its composer's lifetime and was performed three dozen times in London, usually during charity ...given for the Foundling Hospital children's home. Handel always adapted the work to suit the given venue, instruments and singers, reworking the instrumentation and transposing, removing and adding movements. As a result, Messiah does not have a single definitive version and most performances draw on a selection of parts from various versions to form a new whole. Here, György Vashegyi and his orchestra will take the unique step off performing the original version of the work, written by Handel in just 24 days. It is unlikely that Messiah has been performed in this form since its Dublin première on 13 April 1742. Presented by: Orfeo Foundation
