By the time he was 50, Jean-Philippe Rameau had established quite a reputation for himself, primarily for his works for harpsichord and tracts on musical theory. Despite all this, he decided in 1732 to test his skills in an entirely new arena by contacting Simon Joseph Pellegrin and commissioning an opera libretto. It is from this collaboration that Rameau's first major stage work was born in 1733. Hippolyte et Aricie launched a new and fruitful career for as an opera composer. The success of th...e opera was not immediate, however, as French critics fell into two camps following the 1733 première of Hyppolite. Some considered Rameau to have sullied the traditions of tragédie en musique established by Lully and Quinault. By contrast, Rameau's supporters (who were referred to ironically as “les Ramoneurs” or "chimney sweeps") celebrated the ground-breaking nature of the work and its breathtakingly expressive motifs and unexpected dramatic dissonances. The debate dragged on for years, but Rameau's works eventually won the recognition they deserved. The five-act Hyppolite, based on the Jean Racine play Phaedra, saw two revisions in the composer's lifetime. On both occasions, Rameau reworked several aspects of the work. For the third concert on the spring season ticket bill, the Orfeo Orchestra and the Purcell Choir, conducted by György Vashegyi, will perform the 1757 version of the opera.
