The emblematic players of Baroque Hungarian music, the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Orchestra, who play instruments faithful to the musical era, promise to transport the audience on an unusual journey back into the 19th century. The first season ticket concert of 2011 will feature Mendelssohn's Elijah oratorio, one of his finest masterpieces. The life of Elijah was an eventful one that fascinated the composer for many years. The Old Testament prophet struggled against the Baal prophets who believ...ed in more than one god, saved his people from drought, and ascended to heaven in a flaming chariot. In 1845, Mendelssohn finally began work composing this, his second oratorio after Paulus. The work, which was premièred at the Birmingham Festival in 1847, is a natural continuation of the European traditions developed through the oratorios of Bach and Handel. It is no coincidence that György Vashegyi and his musicians have selected this piece of music, they themselves are admirers, students and dedicated interpreters of Baroque music. The Purcell Choir and Orfeo Orchestra are known for their fresh and historically faithful performances, their interpretation of Mendelssohn's Éliása is sure to be both an exciting and novel musical experience.
