Conductor: György Vashegyi Featuring: Anna Korondi, Judit Németh, László Kálmán, István Kovács – singers Beethoven: Mass in C major, op. 86 Mendelssohn: Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich – choral cantata Mendelssohn: Psalm No. 42 (“Wie der Hirsch schreit nach frischem Wasser”), op. 42 “In recent decades one of the most serious questions in the historical music movement is whether it is possible or meaningful to perform the later repertoire on period instruments or replicas once you have cros...sed the «magic» barrier of the year 1800. For us in Hungary, the first milestone was a performance in Fertőd in 2003 of Joseph Haydn’s The Seasons. This was written in 1800 by the sixty eight year old master who spent his early career in the late Baroque world and yet who sketched with steady hands, virtually prophesied the unfolding romanticism, up to the art of Wagner. It is a great joy for us that we can continue this path, this train of thoughts with the performance of Beethoven’s 1807 Mass in C major which was written for Prince Nicholas Esterházy II and two Lutheran oratorio works by Felix Mendelssohn. These composers and works emerge, although in very different ways, emerge from under »Haydn’s cloak«. All three compositions will be performed on contemporary instruments (and we believe this is unprecedented in Hungary), and it strengthens our belief that the music of the first quarter of the 19th century, even the most revolutionary pieces, is linked by a thousand strands to its own musical past and that it cannot be understood properly without this knowledge.” György Vashegyi
