Featuring: Mária Zádori, Eszter Wierdl – soprano, Péter Bárány – counter tenor, Julian Podger – tenor, Raimund Nolte – bass Conductor: György Vashegyi Handel: L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato, HWV 55 – Hungarian premiere Handel composed one of his most remarkable oratorios in the winter of 1739/40. John Milton’s works L’Allegro and Il Penseroso inspired this philosophical work presenting human characters. Handel’s librettist, Charles Jennens, added the Il Moderato unit, as a kind ...of synthesis, to the first two sections assembled from Milton’s texts. The musical richness of the oratorio is unmatched, even in Handel’s oeuvre: besides a depiction of a wide scale of human moods, it also includes variable nature illustrations and in this style is one of the most unified of Handel’s works. Archaic sections evoke the era of Purcell while the mood of those movements presenting the relationship between man and nature look forward to Haydn’s late oratorios. Although by the time he wrote this work, Handel had been living in England for over two decades, it was only now that he seemed to become truly interested in English language oratorio. This ushered in the decade during which he wrote his most remarkable oratorios. “For me this masterpiece proves more graphically than every earlier composition that Handel had truly found his English voice”, says György Vashegyi.
