We now believe that Johann Sebastian Bach composed his first surviving cantatas in 1707, which comprise this evening’s programme. Each is marvellous and yet different and shows four different directions, as if Bach were pondering just where to take the genre in his later career. Christ lag in Todesbanden is a North German style choral cantata, setting Luther’s Easter choral strophes to music. Perhaps the art of the Lübeck organist Franz Tunder, who lived from 1614 to 1667, is the best example... that this musical language was “ready” well before Bach was born. The two funeral cantatas despite their common theme are quite different to one another. Actus tragicus (as it is alternatively known) is unique among all the Bach cantatas with its mood: its orchestra consists of just two flutes and two gambas in addition to the continuo. Aus der Tiefe rufe ich, Herr, zu dir is scored more traditionally but it too is a chamber work. Gott ist mein König was written for a secular occasion, the swearing in of the Mühlhausen town council and Bach fuses its rich, multi-chorus scoring with graceful, subtle and flexible solutions. In all likelihood, this is the first time all four cantatas have been performed like this in Hungary.
