The title role of Puccini’s last opera, which was completed after his death by Franco Alfano, will be played by the Minsk born Maria Gulegina, who over the past two decades has sung the lead roles of Verdi and Puccini operas in the world’s premiere opera houses. She made her debut on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera in 1991, and has since given over 130 performances. She has sung with Pavarotti, Domingo, Leo Nucci, Renato Bruson and José Cura and worked with such conductors as Gergiev, Mehta,... Muti, Levine and Abbado. Marina Poplavskaya has won many competition prizes, including in 2005 the Athens Callas Prize. Contracted to the London Royal Opera House The Independent expressed the view of many concerning this young Russian singer, when it said: “Her conviction is extraordinary, she has the perfect vocal balance for the lirico-spinto repertoire: a big, vibrant sound capable of myriad refinements. She can spin truly rapt pianissimos, but there’s sufficient steel in the voice to dominate in extremis. Mark my words, stardom beckons.” Marcello Giordani who last year was a peerless Faust, this time plays Calaf, a role that gives him plenty of scope for his powerful yet graceful tenor voice. Timur will be played by internationally famous bass baritone Samuel Ramey in this season of broadcasts. Of the stars involved in this production, we certainly should not forget Franco Zeffirelli who with his musical and operatic films, as well as his stage work, has written himself into both music and film history. The Metropolitan Opera reserves the right to change the cast. Running times are approximate only.
