Following highly successful performances in the first half of 2008 of Madama Butterfly and La Bohème, there will be performances of further two Puccini works in September and December at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall. Turandot was Puccini’s final opera and was already completed by Franco Alfano, and as is customary now at the Palace of Arts, will be performed by a number of world famous artists. The title role will be sung by Gyöngyi Lukács, freshly awarded the Kossuth Prize, who made her debut at the Hungarian State Opera House at the age of just twenty. She has sung in many of the world’s leading opera houses, first at the Berlin Deutsche Oper in 1994 in another Puccini role, and leading critics dubbed her “The youngest Tosca in the history of the Deutsche Oper”. She also made her debut at the New York Metropolitan Opera as Tosca back in 2002. In this performance, she will be partnered by Frank Poretta who is from an opera singing family in the United States, and is primarily renowned for his Verdi and Puccini roles, Bulgarian Dejan Vatchkov won at the prestigious Belvedere Competition in Vienna both the Verdi Prize and the special Chamber Opera Prize. World famous Hungarian soprano Andrea Rost has been a regular guest among others at the Vienna Staatsoper, London’s Covent Garden, La Scala Milan and the New York Metropolitan for the past two decades. This semi-staged performance will be conducted by Stefan Soltesz who was born in Hungary and began his musical education here, before studying under Hans Swarowsky in Vienna. He now regularly conducts at the Vienna Staatsoper.
