What experience, knowledge and basic principles of composition have inspired the birth of the worldwide successful Book of Longing, the epoch-making work of Philip Glass? What pre-training, education and cooperation are there in the background of the American musician representing what can be regarded almost a genre of his own? This public discussion is meant to help those interested in Philip Glass and the Book of Longing to get a closer picture of the age, the trends and the musical environmen...t in which the composer creates and in which Book of Longing was born. Philip Glass played the flute from the age of six and he listened to contemporary music, like Bartók and Shostakovich, also at a young age already. At university he pursued studies in physics and mathematics, while he played the piano in his free time. Philips Glass later attended the famous Juilliard School in New York, where he studied piano and composition. It was at that time that he began to reject the general rules of composition, turning to independent composers, although he continued looking for his own individual style still for a long time. In the seventies, he established the seven-member Philip Glass Ensemble, with whom he is to perform his latest work, the Book of Longing, at two night concerts at the Palace of Arts. It is on this occasion that the composer has agreed to a public discussion now, with Csaba Hajnóczy. The discussion is to focus on the following: 1 Glass and the minimalist school of music in the sixties and seventies; 2 Glass and his partnership – collaboration with Robert Wilson and others; 3 Glass and the transgressability of musical genres; 4 The birth of Book of Longing: Glass and Cohen. In the final part of the discussion, the audience will also have the opportunity to ask questions.
