Twins have it easy: they understand each other even without words. If the medium is chamber music, then this “supernatural” ability becomes manifest in the harmony of ensemble play. Despite this, there are few pairs of twins on the international music scene; but those that do exist without exception bring something essential to the field of chamber music. We can expect a similarly exciting experience from this evening’s Spanish twins, who were born in 1985 and perfected their skills at the Queen... Sofía College of Music in Madrid. Pablo and Antonio Martín will perform a work together in which the two string instruments receive twin roles in close but contrasting cooperation with the orchestra. At the same time, the Double Concerto in A minor by Johannes Brahms – the composer’s final work for orchestra – is as much a symphonic work as it is a piece of chamber music. The work was premièred by the violinist Joseph Joachim and the cellist Robert Hausmann, the latter now forgotten but considered the finest exponent of the instrument of his time. The Brahms tribute is timely as close to one month after this concert we will celebrate the 180th birthday of this extraordinary musical genius of the Romantic period. For the performance of such a beautiful programme of music, we welcome one of Hungary’s most versatile orchestras. Led since 1984 – or for almost thirty years – by László Kovács, the Miskolc Symphony Orchestra is at least as conversant in jazz, opera and cross-over genres as it is in the field of symphonic music.
