Pomorska Philharmonic Orchestra Bydgoszcz Conductor: José Maria Floréncio Featuring: Paweł Kowalski – piano Wojciech Kilar: Mazurka from the film music of Revenge Piano Concerto Suite from the film music Pan Tadeusz Krzesany – symphonic poem Wojciech Kilar was born in 1932 and studied piano and composition in Katowice and Krakow, before undertaking further studies in Paris with Nadia Boulanger and in Darmstadt. His compositional style was initially influenced by European and Polish neo...-classicism but from the sixties, along with Krzysztof Penderecki and Henryk Mikołaj Górecki he evolved into a member of the new Polish avant-garde. In the following decade, his musical language simplified and he turned to traditions. This and folk music combined to renew the Polish national style which culminated in the symphonic poem Krzesany (“Mountain Climbing”). As a cinema composer, he contributed music to over one hundred and thirty films by the likes of Andrzej Wajda, Krzysztof Zanussi, Kazimierz Kutz, Roman Polański, Francis Ford Coppola and Jane Campion. José Maria Floréncio was born in Brazil where he studied composition and conducting before entering the New York Julliard School of Music and later the Vienna and Warsaw Music Academies. Since 1985 he has lived in Poland where he has worked as music director of the State Opera of Wrocław and of the Great Theatre in Poznań as well as chief and artistic director of the Polish RTV Symphony Orchestra in Krakow and of the State Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir in Poznań. He is presently the chief conductor of the São Paulo City Theatre Symphony Orchestra.
