J. S. Bach: Six-part Ricercar from The Musical Offering, BWV 1079 Messiaen: Livre du Saint Sacrement: Puer natus est nobis L’apparition du Christ ressuscité à Marie Madeleine J-C. Henry: Trois préludes et un perpetuum mobile Mussorgsky–Mallié: Pictures at an Exhibition Improvisations “à la carte” Loïc Mallié who was born in 1947, is a towering representative of the French organ school. He won prizes at some major piano and organ competitions, including the Improvisation Grand Prix... in Chartres. He studied in the legendary class of Olivier Messiaen, who was born a hundred years ago this year, and pays also homage to him in the first part of his concert with his last organ cycle Livre du Saint Sacrement from 1984. We shall hear two movements from it, which evoke the alpha and omega of Jesus’ life on earth: “Unto us a child is born”, and “The appearance of the resurrected Jesus to Mary Magdalene”. A real gem on this programme is Bach’s Ricercar which is from the set of pieces based on a theme by the King of Prussia, Frederick the Great, known to us now as The Musical Offering. It is one of the most complex creations in music history and is rarely played on the organ. The closing work of the first half of this concert is a piece by Jean-Claude Henry who was a church organist for fifteen years with Mallié. In the second half, we will hear a familiar work originally written for piano but thanks to Ravel’s orchestration, is more familiar in the concert hall in orchestral guise. Mussorgsky’s cycle will be performed for the first time in Hungary in Loïc Mallié’s own arrangement for organ. The immense organ in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall will create some sound colours never heard before. The concert concludes with the French organist demonstrating his talent
