Yevgeni Kissin was born in Moscow in 1971. He began playing the piano when he was two and at six, entered the famous Gnessin School for Musical Talents. When he was ten, he debuted with orchestra and a year later, gave a solo recital in Moscow. He became an international sensation in 1984 when he played Chopin’s piano concertos with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, when still only thirteen. After debuting in Western Europe at the Berlin Festival, he toured Europe with the Moscow Virtuosi and V.... Spivakov. He made his UK debut at the BBC Promenade Concerts and in 1990, first performed in the USA: he played the two Chopin concertos under Zubin Mehta with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, and a week later, gave a solo recital at the Carnegie Hall, the opening event of a series celebrating the august building’s hundred year anniversary. He has won many awards and in 1995 was the youngest artist ever to win Musical America’s “Best Instrumental Performer of the Year” award. In 1997, he was bestowed the Russian “for culture” award. Kissin is in demand all over the world and regularly works with such top conductors as Seiji Ozawa, Claudio Abbado, Vladimir Ashkenazy, James Levine, Kurt Masur and Daniel Barenboim. He has been a guest soloist with all the leading orchestras. In 2010, he won a Grammy award for his accounts of Prokofiev with Vladimir Ashkenazy and the Philharmonia Orchestra.
