Gergely Bogányi was born in 1974 and began playing piano at the age of four in his home town of Vác. He studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, and at Indiana University Bloomington under professors László Baranyay, Zsuzsa Esztó, Matti Raekallio and György Sebők. He has collected awards at numerous music competitions, winning the 1996 International Franz Liszt Competition in Budapest. In 1999, the Bogányi-Kelemen Trio (Barnabás Kelemen - violin, Tibor... Bogányi - cello, Gergely Bogányi - piano) won first prize in an international competition for trios in Kuhmo, Finland.
Today Gergely Bogányi is a favourite performer in the world's concert halls. His repertoire embraces more than 30 piano concertos and a significant portion of the solo piano catalogue, including Chopin's complete works for solo piano. In 2002, within the framework of a series of concerts both here and in Finland, he performed Liszt's 12 Transcendental Études and Chopin's complete works for solo piano, winning the Hungarian Gramofon award for best concert series of the year. He was made an honorary citizen of Vác in 1996, and of Zebegény in 2007. In 2000, he was awarded the Liszt Prize, and in 2002 was presented with the Cross of Merit of the White Rose of Finland by the president of the Republic of Finland. He also won an award recognising his contribution to the culture of Pest County in 2003. On 15 March 2004, he was awarded the Kossuth Prize, followed by the Junior Prima and Prima prizes in 2008 and 2011 respectively.
