Evgeni Koroliov is a special figure on the international music scene, who wins over his audience with an unpretentious performance style, extraordinary artistic and interpretative gifts, and a captivating spiritual affinity with the works he performs. His broad repertoire extends from Bach and the Viennese classics to the compositions of Schubert, Chopin and Debussy, right up to the works of modern masters such as Messiaen and Ligeti. He demonstrates an exceptional affinity with the works of Bac...h, which he has performed in numerous locations, such as the Salzburg Whitsun Festival and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. His recording entitled Art of the Fugue prompted a memorable reaction from the composer György Ligeti: “If I could take only one CD to a desert island, then I would choose Koroliov’s recording of Bach, because even if consumed by hunger and thirst I would listen to it again and again until my dying breath.” Koroliov’s solo recital at the Bach Festival in Leipzig, where he similarly performed the Goldberg Variations, was recorded for posterity on DVD by EuroArts.
