Tchaikovsky: The Seasons, op. 37b Liszt: Mephisto Waltz No. 1 Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition Until now, we have only heard Denis Matsuev perform with orchestra in Hungary, most recently last December when he gave a memorable concert with the St Petersburg Philharmonic at the Palace of Arts. “Perhaps he is the new Horowitz”, wrote The Times about this artist who was born in Irkutsk in Siberia in 1975. And ever since winning the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition in 1998, his career has skyr...ocketed upwards. By now he has performed at all the great concert halls in the world. Every year, he gives about one hundred and fifty concerts and has worked with such conductors as Claudio Abbado, Mariss Jansons, Lorin Maazel, Leonard Slatkin, Evgeny Svetlanov and Yuri Temirkanov; he has performed with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra and Valery Gergiev, as well as the Russian National Orchestra led by Mikhail Pletnev. Outside Europe he enjoyed tremendous successes in Chinese and Brazilian festivals and is himself the artistic director of the Irkutsk “Stars on Baikal” and Moscow “Crescendo” festivals. Much of his repertoire is given over to Russian and Soviet composers which he has performed to acclaim internationally. He has recorded perhaps Tchaikovsky’s best known piano work, The Seasons with its mood pictures of the changing year presented month by month. He is much admired for his accounts of Stravinsky’s Petrushka as well as almost unknown works by Rachmaninov which he recorded on the instrument in Rachmaninov’s villa in Lucerne. He is also keenly interested in jazz: he was the first pianist to give a jazz concert on the stage of the legendary Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire.
