Like yin and yang, two polar opposites in musical history feature on this evening’s programme: on the one hand, the ageless Mozart, and on the other Mahler, a composer who appeared to age prematurely in his intense devotion to his work. Their musical worlds are closer to one another than we might at first think, however, and not only because of the culture of Vienna which defined them both. The same clarity, the same universal standards and the same other-worldly tone characterise the music of b...oth composers. Known as a legendary conductor of Mozart, Mahler also learned a great deal from his predecessor to support his efforts as a composer. In the dramatic episodes of Symphony No. 9, his last finished composition of this kind, the same “Don Giovanni sound” can be discerned that permeates the opening and closing movements of Mozart’s Piano Concerto in C minor, but there are also many common features apparent in the unshakeable calm and flowingly melodic slow movements of both works. The second concert in this series, in which the Pécs orchestra invites world-famous pianists as guests to Budapest, is exciting not only for its choice of music, but also because the soloist for the evening is none other than Dezső Ránki. One of the most popular Hungarian pianists, Ránki is known for his finely crafted performances and absorption in the minutiae of the music.
