The first of four concerts featuring the Pannon Philharmonic, the only symphony orchestra from outside Budapest with a season ticket series in the capital, is extraordinary for a number of reasons. The thematic series is entitled Four Faces of the Piano, where each of the four evenings at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall will showcase a different globally renowned master of the instrument accompanied by the historic ensemble from Pécs. The first concert presents the works of three composers... who were also celebrated in their time as pianists, and for whom the piano played a decisive role in the creation of their compositions. The three composers belonged to the same generation yet represented quite different styles. The concert is also unusual in featuring Alexander Scriabin’s Symphony No. 3, completed in 1904. Undeservedly seldom played, the work evokes an extraordinarily exciting world both within and beyond musical boundaries. The artistic principle of Tibor Bogányi, the conductor of the Pécs orchestra, is to strive for both individuality and diversity. Although the conductor and cellist is in only his second season with the orchestra having pursued a successful career in Finland, most observers agree that he has already taken the 200-year-old ensemble in a new direction. He and his brother, Gergely Bogányi, both play a very active role on the Hungarian music scene, although they rarely perform together on stage. Kossuth Prize-winning Gergely's extraordinary popularity in Hungary rests primarily on his tireless and highly personal interpretation of the Romantic piano repertoire. On this occasion, he will play the role of soloist for the performance of a somewhat anti-Romantic work in the shape of Béla Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 2.
