Pacific 231 was the work that established the reputation of Arthur Honegger as a composer. The first milestone in the music of the “Machine Age”, the title of the piece denotes a class of steam locomotive. In it, the composer shares with his audience the pleasure of watching the sluggishly moving metal monster as it slowly builds momentum and speed. Jacques Offenbach was an outstanding cellist of his time, who himself performed as soloist at the première of the Concerto Militaire, his only such ...work for the instrument. Largely lost, the work was later reconstructed, its remaining fragments put back together like a puzzle to recreate how it might have originally sounded. Maurice Ravel often told stories to the children of his friends. One recalled how on such occasions “…he told the story of Little Ugly Girl, of Beauty and the Beast, of the adventures of the poor little mouse – which he made up just for me.” From this came the idea of fairytales in a musical setting, which the composer eventually put together in the form of Ma mère l'oye (Mother Goose), most frequently performed today as an orchestral suite. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Paul Dukas is a symphonic poem written after a ballad by Goethe. The young apprentice enchants a broom to fetch pails of water, but forgets the magic spell to stop it. The industrious work of the broom is illustrated by a delirious galloping theme, while the desperation of the apprentice is eventually calmed by the theme of the master as he returns to break the spell.
