The Armenian-Soviet Aram Khachaturian’s Flute Concerto is in reality a transcription, the task of which the composer himself encouraged Jean-Pierre Rampal to undertake. The flautist supplied the first movement of the composer’s 1940 Violin Concerto in D major with a new cadenza, while otherwise striving to keep to the original version as far as the limitations of the instrument would permit. There is a discernible common theme running through the various movements, with the closing rondo – unusu...ally for a Soviet composer – revealing the influence of American folk song. Hector Berlioz composed his Symphonie Fantastique around the time of the July Revolution of 1830, with the subtitle “An Episode in the Life of an Artist”. The story tells of an artist who falls in love with a girl he identifies with a fixed musical theme. This “idée fixe” returns in various guises in every movement of the work. The five movements of the symphony are entitled as follows: 1. Daydreams – Passions; 2. A Ball (featuring a solo played by two harps); 3. Scene in the Country; 4. March to the Scaffold; and 5. Finale: Dream of a Witches' Sabbath, Dies irae. Constructed from a patchwork of brilliant ideas, the work’s inspiration is fully autobiographical. Presented by: Pannon Philharmonic
