Rachmaninoff’s bewitching melodies brought him early success with audiences, and so the disappointment that came with the failure of his Symphony No. 1 shortly thereafter was all the more bitter. Rachmaninoff chose a curious method for ranking his own works: "I much prefer my third piano concerto because my second is so uncomfortable to play." Even so, performing the Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor represents a real musical and technical challenge. The work was premièred by the composer himself ...in 1909 (after the artist asked to perform it declined the invitation), on the occasion of his first tour to the United States. The adoption of Russian melody, Slavic theme and waltz rhythm lend the music its moving, passionate originality. The same composer’s song Vocalise, the last of a cycle for soprano or tenor voice (op. 34, 1912), is a piece with piano accompaniment containing no words, but is sung using any one vowel of the singer's choosing. It has inspired a multitude of different instrumental arrangements. Of all these, the most important was prepared by the composer, who himself conducted his own version for symphony orchestra. In the period of strict Soviet cultural policy under Stalin, Dmitri Shostakovich sought compromise solutions in his composition, needing to respond to the expectations of officialdom and his audience alike. His Symphony No. 10 in E minor (op. 93) contains both a musical portrait of Stalin and an evocation of the spirits of those who suffered under his dictatorship. Shostakovich’s own musical calling card is also heard in the work. Presented by: Pannon Philharmonic
