The Philharmonic Society Orchestra's 80th birthday was celebrated in 1933 with a performance of Symphonic Minutes by Ernő Dohnányi. The orchestral work is similar in style to a divertimento, with light-hearted accents reminiscent of the composer's other work. The composition's upbeat is given by the angelic scherzos of the Capriccio movement. The second Rapsodia movement builds on emotional contrasts, while the metrical nature of the Scherzo is provided by an alternation of even and odd beats. T...he fourth movement is a slow series of variations, and the piece is crowned by a virtuoso, soaring rondo in the tradition of Brahms. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme for cello and orchestra was written for 18th century tastes but is nonetheless founded on a theme of the composer's own invention. The seven variations are separated by nothing more than orchestral interludes and virtuoso cadences. The soloists must use every register accessible to their instrument: successions of trills, rushing scales and double stops alternate effectively with joyful cantilenas. The piece is dedicated to the cellist Fitzhagen, who subsequently made changes to the score. Most sheet music published for the work is faithful to this version. Tchaikovsky constantly doubted himself and his music. He was always seeking musical “form”, a logic that would bring various elements together as a harmonious whole. The linchpin of his Symphony No. 5 was an extract from a Glinka opera, which is carried through all four movements as a base motif. Although this theme is funereal in tone in the opening movement, it is slowly transforms into a triumphant march as the piece progresses, setting the scene for the rousing finale. Tchaikovsky himself conducted the première in 1888. Presented by: Pannon Philharmonic
