This concert establishes a loose connection between traditions past and present. Joseph Haydn's Miracle Symphony was first performed in London in 1791 – where legend has it that a chandelier fell from the ceiling during the première, injuring no one. It is the forebear in its symphonic style and concept to the classical Viennese traditions, including as it does an Austrian folk song worked into a minuet. György Kurtág's "...quasi una fantasia...", written from 1987 to 1988, references both the s...ubtitle and opus number (27) of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. The ten-minute piece for piano and chamber orchestra also shares the same unusually quiet and calm tone as the first movement of Beethoven's masterpiece, with the exception of one more intense passage of music. Finally, although Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 1 – which premièred in 1889 in Budapest – was officially based on the novel "Titan" by Jean Paul, it was also an expression of the composer's platonic love for Marion von Weber, wife of the grandson of composer Carl Maria von Weber.
