This year's opening season ticket concert will begin with a 20-minute composition by Péter Eötvös (1944). Recognised as the master of Hungarian avant garde music, Eötvös leads a a generation following in the footsteps of Ligeti and Kurtág. He wrote this piece to commemorate the American astronauts who died when the space shuttle Columbia crashed in 2003. The title of the work, written for solo violin and orchestra supported by an electric guitar, synthesiser and various other instruments, refers... to the number of crew on the flight. Seven was premièred by Pierre Boulez in 2007 and first performed in Hungary the following year by the Pécs orchestra. That performance was conducted by the composer himself, who is also considered among the finest contemporary conductors. Tonight's performance will be conducted by Zoltán Peskó. After the interval, the audience will hear Ferenc Liszt's Faust Symphony, originally composed in 1854 but extended three years later with a tenor solo finale accompanied by a male choir. Composed as a series of sketches of Goethe characters (Faust, Marguerite and Mephistopheles) and a "mystical finale", this is one of Liszt's most significant and portentous works, the interpretation of which represents a major challenge even today.
