In autumn 2000 when Zsolt Hamar became its artistic director, the Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra began a new era in their lives, which has been characterised by exciting concerts and increasingly high standards. Their concert today comprises of three different styles and periods, demonstrating their versatility. András Szőllősy’s Concerto No. 3 is an emblematic work from Hungarian music’s post war period. Written in 1968, two years later it won the UNESCO and International Music Council’s yearly ...Tribune Internationale des Compositeurs Grand Prix, beating 80 compositions from thirty countries. It cleverly achieves a colourful unique sonority just using string instruments like a distant relative of the Baroque concerto. Joseph Haydn’s brother, Michael Haydn worked primarily as a church composer and Mozart regarded him as a model for his own religious works. His compositions in other genres are rarely heard although they contain some fine music. Mozart composed his only Bassoon Concerto in 1774 in Salzburg. This divertimento style light music makes great demands on the soloist who this evening will be one of the world’s premiere exponents of the instrument, Austrian-Croatian Milan Turkovic. Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring starts also with an unassuming bassoon solo, although, in fitting with its subtitle, Pictures from Pagan Russia it develops into a series of wild tableaux with asymmetrical rhythms and harsh dissonances. It is a cardinal work in the orchestral literature, and a stern technical test of both instrumentalists and conductor.
