This concert could easily be described as “the awakening 19th century” if it did not start with the work by Paul Hindermith. His 1943 composition shows already similarities with the Clarinet Concerto to be performed afterwards. Hindemith’s work treats four themes in as many movements drawn from lesser-known Weber works. The first, third and fourth movements get their material from Webers All’ Ongarese piano duets, while the second is from his incidental music to Schiller’s Turandot. The themes g...o through a unique metamorphosis to create a four movement orchestral form that evoke the memory of the classical symphony. This is followed by a pure work by Carl Maria von Weber, his Clarinet Concerto in F minor. The composer was particularly interested in writing virtuosic instrumental works at the start of his career. His Clarinet Concerto opus 26 was premièred by his friend Heinrich Joseph Baermann in 1811 and a little later, Weber wrote: “Since I wrote my Concertino for Baermann, all hell has descended on the orchestra, because everyone wants me to write a concerto for them”. And that year, he wrote his E Flat major Clarinet Concerto (opus 74) and the Clarinet Concerto opus 73 that we will hear in this concert. Schumann’s Symphony No. 1 truly evokes the spirit of spring. It resonates with nature and also the joys of youth.
