Conductor: Zsolt Hamar Soloists: Balázs Bujtor – violin, László Fenyő – cello Zsolt Hamar: Prayer Brahms: Double Concerto in A minor, op. 102 Zoltán Kocsis: Chernobil, 1986 Shostakovich: Symphony No. 9 in E flat major, op. 70 The Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra again returns to the Palace of Arts with a surprising and exciting programme. Each half of the concert will feature a contemporary work, and we will also hear a marvellous work of grand romanticism and conclude with a unique work from... the mid 20th century. Zsolt Hamar, the orchestra’s chief conductor has been increasingly busy composing recently. We will now hear his second world première this year. The Double Concerto is one of the last works Johannes Brahms wrote. It is of symphonic proportions and its golden autumnal sonorities and melodies make it unique. Zoltán Kocsis said this about his composition: “In March 1986, I received the news that I’d been asked to compose a new work. The commission came from Péter Eötvös who hoped to première it in October the same year with the Hungarian State Orchestra. I set to work in late April, not long after we heard about the Chernobil tragedy. I was strongly under the influence of the Chernobil reports for weeks and like it or not, the Chernobil story vibrates in the composition, both in terms of drama and in purely abstract musical terms”. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9 is a unique joyous work. “Cheerful little piece”, is how the composer described it.
