Conductor: Leopold Hager Featuring: Radovan Vlatković – horn Mendelssohn: The Hebride Overture, op. 26 R. Strauss: Horn Concerto in E flat major, op. 11, No. 2 Schubert: Symphony No. 9 in C major (“The Great”), D. 944 “Yes. Vienna. For many years it played a leading role in music history. From the first Viennese school to the second. From Mozart to Schoenberg. And among the first was Franz Schubert and then from the late 19th century there was Richard Strauss whose symphonic poems and o...rchestra sound world shook up ears that had overdosed on romanticism. The youngsters loved him: they called him their leader but when Strauss heard the new explorations of the 20th century, he rejected them, and later denounced them saying “Sadly, I started all this rubbish”. Schubert by contrast experienced few public successes, only his circle of friends realised his true genius. The so called »Great« Symphony in C major was not accepted for performance in 1828 and the score was very nearly lost. Luckily, Schumann discovered it and premiered the work in 1839 in Leipzig. Its dimensions (described »heavenly lengths«) and seriousness make it one of the composer crowning achievements.” Zsolt Hamar
