Featuring: Marianna Váradi – soprano Conductor: Zsolt Hamar Ravel: Dances Nobles et Sentimentales György Kurtág: Messages of the late Miss R. V. Troussova, op. 17 Schumann: Symphony No. 3 in E flat major (“Rhenish”), op. 97 Maurice Ravel composed his poetically inspired set of eight miniature waltzes in 1911, following Schubert’s example for piano and one year later, arranged it for large orchestra. Perhaps the orchestral version expresses the impressionistic French lyricism of these ...pieces better than the original. We find childlike playfulness as well as amorous banter. György Kurtág composed his song cycle between 1976 and 1980 to 21 verses by Rimma Dalos, who was born Rimma Vladimirova Troussova. The music is not only beautiful in the “traditional sense” and is a highlight of a concert with a poetic theme but also because of its colourful orchestration. Robert Schumann’s Third Symphony is actually his fourth and last, and was composed in 1850 when he moved to Düsseldorf alongside the Rhein. This five movement work is inspired not only by the German landscape and beauty of the local folk music but also by the Cologne cathedral and all its novelistic associations.
